  4. Winter Survival

As we are at the tail end of one of the most brutal winters in recent Minnesota history, it’s not just the physical dust that needs to be cleared off of most surfaces, it is also the mental dust. It is a natural inclination for many, if not most, to just retreat into our caves during these past Winter months, with the idea of hibernation being almost like a magnet. Trips to the gym became scarce, as did the energy to push forward on software projects that have demanded more attention. This is true for my blogging and writing efforts, which along with the gym and software/business projects, are now getting warmed back up as Spring approaches.

Another factor is the fact that we just took our first real vacation in a year’s time, which was even more of a necessity as it was a niceity. Vacation is the act of vacating, which meant that I spent no time working on any of the things that I mentioned above. This is a good thing, and I have learned that I need more smaller vacation blocks throughout the year in order to maintain consistent effectiveness in my daily work and projects. This is particularly true when I love what I do, which means that I have a tendency to throw myself into my work at the expense of that work/life balance. Vacation is necessary in order to recharge and maintain an edge.

As we returned this week after 11 days next to the ocean in 80 degree temps, I feel that energy restored. I am now ready to get back to it, and hopefully tweak the routine as well, baking in more time for documenting and sharing my work, and being consistent in doing so. There are a lot of things rolling around the decks, and as I get them lined up and organized, I will do my best to share it up here as well. From new technologies and concepts, to business and marketing activities which will really be a time of schooling for me, I am moving into the next phase of my career with a lot of enthusiasm and general feeling of being stoked.

We are truly at a watershed moment in the world of technology, I believe, and I for one want to jump on this wave and ride it for all its worth, all while sharing and giving back to a community that has been behind my growth for the past 2 decades.
